The Short Answer
SEO is a monthly investment, not a one-off purchase, and it pays back slowly. Technical fixes and low-competition searches can move within four to eight weeks. Competitive searches usually take six to twelve months. Anyone who promises a first-page ranking by a fixed date is promising something they do not control. Google says it plainly: no one can guarantee a number one ranking.
What You Are Actually Paying For
SEO is three kinds of work, and most pricing differences come from how much of each is included.
- Technical work. Making sure search engines can crawl and index every important page, that pages load quickly, and that titles, headings and structured data are correct. This is mostly one-off, with light upkeep.
- Content. Service pages and articles that answer what your customers search for. This is ongoing, and it is where most of the long-term growth comes from.
- Authority. Other reputable websites mentioning and linking to you: directories, reviews, partners, press. This is the slowest part and the hardest to fake safely.
How SEO Is Usually Priced
- One-off audit. A review of the site with a prioritised list of fixes. Useful as a first step or when you have your own developer.
- Monthly retainer. A fixed monthly fee covering an agreed amount of technical work, content and reporting. This is the most common model.
- Project. A defined piece of work such as a migration, a redesign with redirects, or a batch of pages.
For reference, our own published pricing: one-off technical audits start at £800, monthly retainers start at £1,000 for a focused engagement covering technical fixes and on-page optimisation, and content-led and link acquisition programmes start at £1,500 to £3,000 per month depending on volume and how competitive the target searches are.
What Makes It Cost More or Less
- Competition. Ranking a local service in one city is a different job from ranking nationally against established brands.
- The state of the site. A slow site with broken links and thin pages needs repair before growth work can begin.
- How much content is needed. More services and more locations mean more pages.
- Who writes. If your team can supply expertise and review drafts quickly, the work goes further.
- Number of markets. Targeting several countries multiplies the research and content.
How Long It Takes, Honestly
- Weeks 1 to 4: audit, technical fixes, tracking set up. Little visible change.
- Months 2 to 3: impressions start to rise as pages are indexed and improved. Searches for your own brand name clean up first.
- Months 3 to 6: clicks from lower-competition searches. This is where a new site first sees enquiries from people who had not heard of it.
- Months 6 to 12: movement on the competitive searches, if content and authority work have continued.
A brand new website takes longer than an established one, because it has no history or links for search engines to trust yet.
What to Measure
Rankings are a means, not the goal. The numbers that matter are enquiries, bookings or sales that came from search. Before that shows up, the early signs to watch in Google Search Console are indexed pages, impressions and clicks for searches that do not include your brand name. Our keyword research guide explains how to choose the searches worth targeting.
Red Flags When Hiring for SEO
- A guaranteed ranking or a guaranteed date. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO warns against firms that guarantee rankings or claim a special relationship with Google.
- Hundreds of links for a small fee. Bought link packages can lead to penalties that take months to undo.
- No access for you to Search Console or analytics. The data is yours.
- Reports full of rankings for searches nobody types.
- No explanation of what was done this month.
Can You Do It Yourself?
Partly. An owner can set up a Google Business Profile, ask customers for reviews, write helpful answers to common questions and keep contact details consistent everywhere. Technical fixes, site structure and a steady content programme are where outside help earns its fee.
